There's also a ton of traditional Mexican dishes that much of the world doesn't get to experience. For those, we've got you covered.
Next time you're out, skip on the seafood tacos and guacamole. Try one of these 5 traditional
Mexican dishes.Â
1. Mole
Mole is a bittersweet sauce, composed of usually 20 ingredients or more. What makes Mole so unique is that one of its primary ingredients is dark chocolate- lots and lots of dark chocolate.Â
It also is full of various nuts, spices, and chili peppers which also give it its sweet and spicy taste.Â
This flavorful dish is usually served with chicken and rice. It can also take form as a sauce within an enchilada, burrito, taco, and much more.Â
2. Sopes
A great lunch option is sope, which are smaller fried masa with an assortment of toppings.
Masa is a type of dough that is made from corn.Â
Typically, sope will come with refried beans, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and salsa.
But, you can sub in toppings, as you'd like. Sope is a crowd favorite because their mini-size makes them a tasty shareable.
(If you can help yourself from eating them all, that is. If not, we understand.)Â
3. Huachinango a la Veracruzana
Seafood lovers- this one is for you. Huachinango a la Veracruzana, which translates to Red Snapper from Veracruzana, actually has a blend of Spanish and Mediterranean flavor.Â
An entire Red Snapper is used to make this classic dish. It's marinated in lime juice and a variety of seasonings.Â
Then, it's topped with olives and capers (where the Mediterranean blend comes in). It's typically served with rice or roasted potatoes.Â
4. Cochinita Pibil
This slow-roasted pork dish is marinated in an acidic citrus juice before being seasoned with achiote seed. After, it's then wrapped in banana leaves.Â
It's served great as a taco topped with pickled red onion inside a hot tortilla.Â
Also, it is made with pork shoulder, so it's the perfect opportunity to bring family and friends together for a meal.Â
5. Orange Flan
Sure, we've all tried the spongy, sweet filled custard, flan. But, have you tried it's more vibrant, fresh cousin, Orange Flan?Â
Orange flan is made with a citrus zest inside the creamy base. Then, it's often topped with another orange slice for an even more refreshing taste.Â
This dish is often lighter than a usual piece of flan. But, if you've saved room for dessert, it'll still be able to curb those sweet-tooth cravings. Â
